Is the landfill and collection center open all week ?
- Yes, The landfill is open Monday through Friday, 7:00AM until 3:00PM, and Saturdays from 7:00AM until 12:00PM. The landfill's collection center is open Monday through Saturday, 7:00AM until 3:30PM; however, we stop receiving waste at 3:15PM.
What payment methods do you accept ?
- We accept checks and most major credit cards. We do not accept cash. Commercial customers can also open an account. Our credit application can be downloaded here: BRRA Account Application
Do citizens of Rockbridge County and the City of Lexington have to pay to dispose of their waste at the landfill ?
- Citizens of Rockbridge County and the City of Lexington do not have to pay to dispose of household waste from their primary residence.
Does the landfill except old tires ? If so, what does it cost ?
- The landfill does except tires. Citizens of Rockbridge County are allowed to dispose of 8 light truck or car tires, off the rim, per year for free. If disposing of more than 8 tires, or if you have tires other than light truck and car tires off the rim, you are required to pay. For a list of fees, please see our FY 2025 Master Fee Table.
Can I dispose on my car’s old battery at the Landfill ?
- Yes, we accept most types of automotive batteries at our Collection Center. Automotive, off-road vehicle, motorcycle, and lawn mower batteries may not be disposed off at the County's Collectiions Centers. They must be taken to the Landfill's Collection Center only.
Does the Landfill’s Collection Center accept material for recycling ?
- Our Collection Center does not except household comingled recycling. We do accept scrap metal.
Why does the scale attendant need my name, address, and license tag number ?
- Our scale attendant is required to record your name and address in order to verify that you are a resident of the County or City. Your license tag number is also required to identify your vehicle and makes it possible to save your vehicles tare weight (Empty weight of your vehicle), so you don’t have to weigh out on every trip.
Does the Landfill’s Collection Center except material for recycling ?
- Our Collection Center does not except household comingled recycling. We do accept scrap metal; however, we do not buy it. For residents of Rockbridge County, you can take your commingled material to one of the County’s collection centers. I am a Rockbridge County resident and my home was recently destroyed by fire, will I be charged to dispose of the debris ?
- The County has a Burned Residential Structure policy which clearly explains this. It can be found here: Burned Residential Structure Policy
I am a contractor performing work for a Rockbridge County or City of Lexington resident, at their primary residence, will I have to pay for the debris that I bring to the landfill ?
- Neither the County nor the City will cover the cost of waste generated by a contractor. If a Rockbridge County resident preforms the work at their primary residence, and delivers the waste to the landfill, they will not be charged.
If I live in the County of Rockbridge, or the City of Lexington, and I plan to cut down a tree, can I bring that to the landfill, and if so, will I have to pay ?
- The landfill does except brush and yard waste from the residents of the County and City, free of charge. Woody brush greater than 8 inches in diameter is not excepted. Brush and yard debris must also be free of any other waste, such as; paper, plastics, painted and or treated wood, and plywood.
Can I dispose of old paint at the landfill ?
- Only latex (water based) paint can be disposed of at the landfill, and it must be hardened prior to disposal. This can be accomplished by mixing kitty litter, or oil dry with the paint, at a ratio of 50% each, and leaving the lid off for a few days.
- Oil based paints are not accepted at the landfill, but can be disposed of during our annual Household Hazardous Waste Day event which is scheduled each fall.
